Start with the number of guests
Design the majlis for the number you usually receive, not for rare occasions. Count the seats you need on a normal day, and plan light extra seating that can be added when needed.
Layout makes conversation
Facing seating on both sides makes conversation easy, and the head of the room is a natural place for a main seat or a statement sofa. Leave comfortable walkways for serving coffee, and do not fill every wall.
Style: classic or modern
A classic majlis with carving and gilding gives clear luxury and suits large rooms and high ceilings. A modern majlis in simple lines suits smaller rooms and feels more spacious. The two can be combined through one colour palette and recurring materials.
Fabric and foam
The majlis gets heavy use, so choose a durable, easy-to-clean fabric and high-density foam that keeps its shape. Look at the fabric sample under the room's own lighting before approving it.
Lighting and details
A main chandelier with soft side lighting gives the room depth. Mirrors, consoles, side tables and serving trays complete the picture and keep the majlis ready for guests at any time.
