Gilding and wood
Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, or a soft brush that reaches into the carving. Do not use water, cleaners or alcohol on gilded surfaces; over time they strip the protective layer. If a mark appears, ask the maker how to treat that particular finish before trying anything.
Fabric and upholstery
Vacuum the fabric regularly with a soft nozzle. Deal with any spill immediately by blotting, not rubbing. Follow the cleaning instructions for that fabric, and prefer professional cleaning for delicate fabrics. Turning the cushions from time to time spreads the wear on the foam.
Sun, air conditioning and humidity
Direct sunlight fades fabric and wood, so use curtains during the strongest sun. Do not place pieces right in front of an air-conditioning vent or next to a heat source; quick changes in temperature and humidity stress the wood and the joints.
Mistakes to avoid
- Spraying cleaners or air fresheners directly onto the wood or gilding.
- Dragging pieces across the floor instead of lifting them when moving.
- Putting hot or wet cups on the wood without a coaster.
- Leaving a spill on the fabric until it dries.
